Literature Text
'Do you think in thoughts or words?"
Asked the Cheshire Cat sitting on her
High perch.
Teeth grinning-
Mind slowly spinning
Circum-skipping a forgotten topic,
Like a dusty record player
Humming to itself.
Such a simple melody
For such a complex machine.
A mortal machine,
A slow machine that likes its
Instruction booklet.
The Cheshire Cat grins again,
And closes the booklet.

Cheshire Cat's Lullaby
Dear little Alice, please don't cry
Tears of woe won't help you get by
I know that you feel scared, lost and alone
Since you cannot find your way back home
Have strange things happened?
Is there anything I need to know?
Did you taste things that make you shrink or grow?
Did you suffer any, please say it isn't so!
I will help you out, just wait and see
You'd be glad that you found a cat like me
I'll show you around this fascinating place
Only if you keep a smile on your face
No more reading signs that say "This way" or "Yonder"
Now you don't have to sit down and try to ponder
Which way should you go, you ask?
I seem to find that

The Cheshire Cat
The nights grow longer as I wait for my dear sweet Alice. Always having something interesting to say with quite a mouth for such a young barn; however, it is that trait that truly brings my heart closer to her radiant figure in this bleak world. Her stride keeps my gaze until I can no longer stand the agony of knowing the truth of this my secret, nice love.
Though she does not understand all of what I have done for her is out of my deep want of her to love me as I love her. My taunts are only a true want of her to endeavor at these the journeys she must undertake herself and only by herself.
The nights and days passed as I wait

Cheshire
Cheshire stretched and yawned, looking half-crosseyed down at the girl who'd spoken and woken him up so abruptly. She was smiling up at him in what she obviously thought was a cute or charming way, drumming her fingers against the cover of a small floppy book held in her hands. Cheshire yawned and grinned back, making his mouth as unnervingly wide as possible in hopes of chasing her off.
"Can you help me?" the girl asked sweetly. "I was wondering if you could tell me which way I should go from here, pretty please?"
"That depends on where you want to end up," Cheshire replied politely, if a bit condescendingly. The girl's smile slipped for a

If you figure out who the Cheshire cat is, what the machine is, and what the booklet is....congrats! you've got the poem. I'm stumped otherwise.

Hmm. Maybe a psychiatrist? The complex machine a mental patient, skipping topics, repressed memories, only able to do the simplest things, maybe thoughts, repeating again and again? Seeing the psychiatrist as Cheshire cat might only be percieved so by the patient, although he might be grinning due to progress or because he presents a rare, interesting case. The booklet...the notepad, all the things the shrink found out so far, all his behavior, thus how he seems to work, maybe instructions how to deal with him? Just why would the patient like it?
